Meet Our Dedicated Team

Nomini Bay Oyster Ranch is the realization of a lifelong dream for our partners, Paul Simpson and Jess Jones, both hailing from Manassas, Virginia. Their shared passion for oysters and the environment led them to acquire Nomini Bay Oyster Company in 2016.

Bringing their unique expertise to the table the backbone of our operations:

Paul Simpson — Partner and Director of Operations. With over 30 years of experience managing operational teams and large-scale projects, Paul ensures the seamless functioning of our ranch. His love for oysters, combined with his skills and knowledge, has been instrumental in the success of our operation, producing large, high-quality oysters.

Jess Jones, Ph.D. — Partner and Technical Advisor for Operations. Jess earned his Ph.D. in Fisheries Science from Virginia Tech, specializing in mollusk biology and aquaculture. With Jess's extensive knowledge and experience, we guarantee you receive the finest, freshest oysters.

Our Story

A Legacy of Dedication

Nomini Bay Oyster Ranch traces its roots back to April 2014 when Don Neilson, following 40 years of dedicated service to the Department of Veterans Affairs, and five years as CEO of a private company assisting Veterans, retired and settled in the Northern Neck. However, retirement proved fleeting as Don's love for the water and his commitment to preserving the bay led him to embark on his next adventure—oyster farming.

It was during a conversation with a neighbor over drinks and cigars, passionately discussing oysters, that the idea for Nomini Bay Oyster Ranch took shape. What began as a spark of inspiration soon evolved into a family business, as Don's children eagerly joined him, sharing his deep appreciation for oysters and the water. Together, they toiled tirelessly to turn the vision of Nomini Bay Oyster Ranch into reality.

In 2016, after two years of nurturing the business and observing his children's capable management, Don decided to retire once more. Stepping into their father's shoes, Paul Simpson and Todd Neilson, along with their lifelong friend Dr. Jess Jones, assumed ownership of the business. United in their love for oysters and dedication to their community, Paul, Jess, and the Nomini Bay Oyster Ranch team continue to grow their father's legacy—protecting the bay, cultivating delectable oysters, and supporting the community, one half shell at a time.
